Impaction occurs when permanent teeth are unable to grow into the mouth as they should. Wisdom teeth and canines are the most commonly affected teeth, but impaction can happen to any tooth.
There are several reasons why a tooth can become impacted:
- Too many teeth in the mouth or teeth too close together
- Lack of normal adult teeth
- Growths or tumors blocking the tooth’s path
The assisted eruption of impacted teeth is a common treatment option. Your orthodontist will work together with an oral surgeon or periodontist to guide the impacted tooth into its appropriate place in the mouth.
How does assisted eruption work?
Braces will be used to create space for the impacted tooth to come in. Once space has been created, you will undergo a minor surgical procedure by an oral surgeon or periodontist. They will move the overlying gum and/or bone tissue to expose the impacted tooth, and a small orthodontic bracket and chain will be bonded to the tooth. Your orthodontist will use the chain to assist the tooth into place as it comes in.
Why do I need assisted eruption treatment?
A tooth that is left impacted can cause several oral health issues and complications, such as
- Jaw pain
- Teeth that shift in alignment or become crowded
- Root damage
- Tooth loss
- Infection
