What sets an orthodontic specialist apart?
Orthodontic specialists have all the training of a general dentist, but a general dentist does not have all the training of an orthodontist! This training usually begins with an undergraduate degree in science, with three to four years of training as a general dentist. Dental school training focuses mainly on restoring and replacing teeth, but all aspects of dental care are included. An orthodontic specialist requires two to three years of additional specialty training, which includes the development of teeth, jaw growth deformities, and oral development. Tooth movement and the engineering principles behind braces and appliances are also studied.
While a dentist may provide orthodontic care, it is only a small part of their day, focusing on cleanings, fillings, bridges, crowns, and cosmetic dentistry. As an orthodontic specialist, we focus our time exclusively on orthodontic treatment, such as braces, Invisalign®, appliances, and retainers. On top of our additional education to become a specialist in the field, we also maintain much more orthodontic experience than a general dentist by exclusively providing orthodontic care at our practice.
