Problems with the bite are one of the most common issues we see at Smile Appeal Orthodontics. There can be several types of bite problems and reasons for them, and each requires customized treatment for correction. Your unique situation will determine the type of treatment Dr. Youngker recommends.
Types of Misalignment
There are several types of misalignment that can happen with the bite:
- Overbite – the upper teeth severely overlap the lower teeth
- Underbite – the lower teeth extend beyond the front teeth
- Crossbite – a single tooth or multiple teeth bite on the inside
- Open bite – the upper front teeth do not overlap the lower front teeth at all
It is important to correct any bite misalignment because, left untreated, they can cause several oral health issues, such as
- Jaw pain
- Damage to tooth enamel
- Cavities
- Bad breath
- Tooth loss
- Gum disease
- Issues with speech
- Facial pain
- TMJ pain
The Herbst appliance and the use of elastics are common treatments for correcting a bite misalignment. The type of bite correction method used will be determined by Dr. Youngker after evaluating your specific condition.
Correcting Bite Misalignment
The Herbst appliance is a fixed appliance that is placed on the back molars using a metal connector piece between your upper and lower jaw. Once the appliance is placed, the jaw is guided into its new position every time a patient closes their mouth. This ensures consistent and correct use, and can even accelerate the rate of treatment.
Elastics can work to correct the bite and are similar to the Herbst appliance. Even though they are removable, your elastics should be worn 24 hours a day, removing them only to brush or floss your teeth, or to replace your elastics. Elastics should be changed at every 12 hours at the least to maintain proper elasticity and tension.
